For teams launching a digital bank or rebuilding one: five studios with live banking work you can check, and the job each one does best.

By Renua team · October 10, 2026

A neobank has no branch, no marble lobby and no teller who remembers your name. Everything a traditional bank used to say with its buildings, a digital bank has to say with a screen and a card.

That makes design a bigger job in digital banking than almost anywhere else. The brand has to earn trust before anyone deposits money. The app has to feel as reliable as a vault and as easy as a messaging app. And the card in someone’s wallet is often the only physical object the bank will ever own.

We picked five studios with public, checkable work for banks and digital banking products. The order is not a quality ranking. A national bank rebuilding its app and a startup launching its first card need very different partners.

Full disclosure: we’re Renua, and we’ve included ourselves. We’ve held our own entry to the same standard as the others, watch-out included.

The short answer

The best design agencies for neobanks and digital banks in 2026 are Wolff Olins, Studio Output, UXDA, Qubstudio and Renua. Wolff Olins suits established digital banks repositioning their brand. Studio Output builds identities for new banking products. UXDA and Qubstudio specialize in banking app UX, with measurable rating and user growth. Renua is the boutique option for fintechs that want brand, product and motion designed as one system.

Key Takeaways

• In digital banking, the app is the branch. App store ratings are one of the clearest public measures of design quality.
• Qubstudio’s redesign took Gulf Bank’s App Store rating from 1.9 to 4.8. UXDA’s work helped Bank of Jordan go from 2.8 to 4.7 stars in a year.
• Brand-first studios like Wolff Olins and Studio Output fit launches and repositioning. UX specialists like UXDA and Qubstudio fit app rebuilds.
• The card is a brand asset, not an afterthought. Monzo’s coral card became one of the most recognizable symbols in UK banking.
• Renua designs brand identity, product and motion together. Its banking work includes Freedom Finance Bank and Cruz, a self-initiated digital banking concept featured on Behance.

What neobank design has to get right

Most design problems in banking come down to one question: why should anyone trust a bank they can’t walk into? Four answers show up again and again in the best work.

The brand does the branch’s job. Traditional banks signaled safety with architecture and history. Digital banks have to signal it with clarity, consistency and tone. That’s why so many neobanks rejected the navy-blue banking look early on. They needed to be recognized as something new before they could be trusted as something safe.

Onboarding is the first product. Before users see a balance, they go through identity checks, document uploads and waiting. That’s where most first impressions are formed, and where many are lost. A calm, well-explained verification flow does more for trust than any campaign.

The app store rating is a public design review. For a digital bank, the rating is often the first thing a prospective customer checks. It also makes design results unusually easy to measure, which is why the best banking studios publish them.

The card is the only thing people can hold. A payment card goes into wallets, onto café counters and into social posts. Monzo’s hot-coral card turned into a viral symbol that spread the brand by word of mouth. Treating the card as part of the identity system, not a print job at the end, is one of the cheapest trust-builders a neobank has.

1. Wolff Olins

Best for: established digital banks repositioning their brand for the next stage of growth.

Wolff Olins is one of the best-known brand consultancies in the world, and it has recent, directly relevant banking work. In 2025, Starling appointed Wolff Olins and The Sunshine Company as its agencies for a major brand overhaul.

For a neobank, the interesting part is how far the change reached into the product people actually touch. The new identity arrived on the cards in customers’ wallets and in the app they open every day, and the bank dropped “Bank” from its public name. A neobank at Starling’s stage doesn’t need help being noticed any more. It needs to stay distinctive while it grows into a much broader financial brand.

Watch-out: this is the top of the market in both price and scale. Wolff Olins fits a bank with an in-house product team and a strategic brand question, not a startup that needs its first app designed.

2. Studio Output

Best for: launching a new banking product or segment that needs its own identity.

Studio Output built the visual identity for Monzo Business, the bank’s business account launch. The brief was delicate: keep the simplicity people loved about Monzo, while adding the trust and reassurance businesses need from a bank. The work was delivered over a series of design sprints, for an audience that might not have known the Monzo brand at all.

That’s a common neobank problem. A consumer brand built for young retail customers doesn’t automatically work for a business owner deciding where to keep payroll. Extending a brand without breaking it is a specific skill.

Watch-out: Studio Output’s banking work here was brand identity. For the app itself, Monzo relied on its own product team. If you need both, check how much product design the studio will take on.

3. UXDA

Best for: banks rebuilding their mobile app, especially in markets where digital banking is still catching up.

UXDA positions itself as the first UX agency focused on banking, with a design methodology it says has been used by more than 70 financial institutions. Its best-known results are unusually concrete. After UXDA’s redesign, Bank of Jordan’s mobile app went from a 2.8 to a 4.7 rating on Google Play in one year.

It also works with digital-first brands. For Liv, the digital bank from Emirates NBD, UXDA expanded the ecosystem into three products, including the Liv X lifestyle and money app and the Liv Lite app for children’s financial education. Its banking super app for Mauritius Telecom won two Red Dot Design Awards.

Watch-out: UXDA publishes many concept projects alongside client work, and labels some clearly as concepts that were never launched. When you review its portfolio, separate the two.

4. Qubstudio

Best for: digital banks that want an app redesign tied to measurable growth.

Qubstudio has worked with ila Bank, the first digital-only bank in Bahrain, for three years and counting. The studio redesigned the app’s UX, built a unified design system and designed new features. ila became the number one bank app in Bahrain on both iOS and Android, and the work won a Red Dot award.

Its Gulf Bank work shows the same pattern at a traditional bank going digital. After more than a year of research and redesign, Gulf Bank’s App Store rating went from 1.9 to 4.8, and its user base grew by 78%.

Qubstudio also covers the web side of banking. For Ozone API, a UK open banking company, it delivered a rebrand and website redesign that the studio reports increased website views by 260%.

Watch-out: Qubstudio’s strongest proof is product UX for established banks. If your main need is a distinctive brand for a new challenger, look closely at its identity work before committing.

5. Renua

Best for: fintechs and digital banks that want brand identity, product design and motion built as one system.

Renua is a product design and branding studio based in Switzerland and Estonia. Its fintech work sits at the point where brand and product meet, which is exactly where neobanks tend to struggle.

Freedom Finance Bank

Freedom Finance Bank needed a more flexible and contemporary digital experience across product and brand. Renua designed a scalable system around simplicity, usability and motion, covering product design, brand identity, motion and campaign design.

The product work focused on accessibility, hierarchy and speed, to help users move through complex financial tools more intuitively. The identity was built to work across interfaces, campaigns and digital communication, with motion assets designed for product launches, outdoor placements and digital media. Renua also explored how the identity could reach the one object customers carry with them, in a bank card series concept that treats the card as part of the brand system rather than a separate print job.

Cruz

Cruz is Renua’s self-initiated concept for a digital bank, and we want to be clear about that, given our own advice below to ask for launched work. It isn’t a live product. What it shows is how the studio thinks when nobody sets the brief.

The idea was to challenge the visual language of traditional finance with a banking product that feels more accessible, expressive and culturally relevant for a younger audience. Renua combined product design, brand identity, motion and illustration into one system, designed for speed, clarity and accessibility on mobile. The concept was featured on Behance, as was the Freedom Finance Bank work. Renua’s fintech portfolio also includes SmartCredit.io, and its wider client list includes work in Web3 finance for PancakeSwap and LooksRare.

Watch-out: UXDA and Qubstudio can each point to several launched banking apps with public rating gains. Renua can’t yet, so a large bank rebuilding a mature app should weigh that. Clients on Clutch have also asked for more frequent meetings in the early branding phase; set the meeting rhythm before work starts.

How to choose a neobank design agency

Decide whether your problem is brand or product. A repositioning question needs a brand consultancy. A low app rating needs a UX team. Many neobanks need both, but rarely in equal measure at the same time.

Ask for launched work, not concepts. Banking portfolios are full of beautiful concept apps. Ask which projects are live, and check them in the app store yourself.

Ask for numbers. The best banking studios can point to ratings, user growth or completion rates. If a studio can’t show any measurable result from a banking project, that tells you something.

Ask how they handle regulation. Compliance shapes onboarding, disclosures and even colour choices in some markets. A team that treats regulatory requirements as a design input, not an obstacle, will save you months.

Ask who designs the card. If the answer is “your print vendor,” your brand will stop at the edge of the screen.

FAQ

What does a neobank design agency do?
It designs the brand identity, mobile app, website and often the payment card for a digital bank. Some agencies focus on brand, others on app UX. The strongest partners connect the two so the product feels like the brand.

How do you measure design quality in a banking app?
App store ratings, onboarding completion, active users and support ticket volume are the most common measures. Public case studies like Gulf Bank’s move from 1.9 to 4.8 stars show how directly design can move them.

Should a neobank hire a branding agency or a UX agency?
It depends on the problem. New banks and repositioning banks usually start with brand. Banks with a working product but weak ratings or engagement usually start with UX. Look for a partner that can work with the other side, whichever you hire first.

How important is card design for a neobank?
More than most founders expect. The card is the only physical object many customers ever get from a digital bank, and it travels with them everywhere. Monzo’s coral card is the best-known example of a card becoming a marketing channel.

Do neobanks need a separate website designer?
Not necessarily. The website is often where trust is decided before download, so it should come from the same brand system as the app. Studios like Qubstudio and Renua design websites as part of broader brand and product work.

Showing trust on a small screen

Every bank says it can be trusted. Digital banks have to show it, on a small screen, to people who have never met them.

A good design partner gives you the material for that proof: a bank that feels clear in the first minute, calm during verification and recognizable every time someone pays.
